Hippie Dresses
The 1960s gave us haute hippie dresses as well as many other additions to our current fashion.
You can’t often go down to your local hippie dresses boutique to purchase your bohemian items, but you can purchase your cool hippie clothes online from places like Ebay and Amazon. Many online stores also sell hippie costumes which are worth considering.
But, those who really like the 60s styles want great designer dresses made to appeal to our fashion sense. We like patchwork and tie dye in summer, winter, fall and spring outfits. We want hippie prom dresses and hippie wedding dresses and gowns. And we don’t just want dresses; we want skirts and shirts, hoodies and socks.
Unfortunately even online hippie shop dresses are only available in a few styles, colors and sizes. For the real boho clothes lover there is only one real option, and that is to make your own dresses.
Homemade dresses and other clothes aren’t as hard as many people think. The real issue is that they were personalized, and personalization takes time and creativity and a little bit of know how. Sure you can buy tie dye fabric and make a dress. And it is a great way to make some bohemian clothes when you first start out. But once you’ve done one or two of them you will want to branch out and try some other ideas.
For example, patchwork requires some quilting skills, both in cutting out and in piecing in addition to sewing the actual dress.
Besides full on patchwork, there is set in fabric like is done on true bell bottom jeans and blue jean skirts. This is repurposed fabric from more than one garment you can use to make your boho dresses really far out.
Embroidery is another great addition to your clothes that give it that great hippie look and feel. There are a myriad of styles of embroidery you can learn. Keep it simple to begin and you’ll see how quickly you can learn this craft to make your dresses more like the 60s clothes.
Liquid embroidery if you can find it, or modern fabric paints, can also be used to change up the look of your garment once you’ve sewn it together.
Patches were also popular in the hippie era. They were used to patch holes and make garments last longer, especially since much of what they wore was bought second hand because they were protesting corporate America and refused to buy what was being dished up as fashion at the time. But patches can be added now in a multitude of ways just to make a personal statement.
Another really easy embellishment that was used in the 1960s was the addition of trim. This was typically rick rack or some other fabric added to cuffs, collars and pockets to enhance the look and change the style to a more personal look. Different colors, fabrics and laces work great for this.
And of course you’ll want to try your own hand at tye dying rather than just buying it already dyed.
Whether you make your own hippie dresses, or buy them you’ll truly enjoy the hip way you feel wearing your new decked out gear and know that you are reflecting your personal style.
