The Mods were known for their heavy, dark eye makeup and sharply made up features. They had short hair (or the women did) and it was still very UP, a hold over from the beehives and such of the 50s. But the 60s hippies went more for a Natural Look and let it “all hang out.” They didn’t wear make up, and the let their hair grow long. They quit shaving for the most part and let nature take its course. They thought nature was “beautiful baby.” And in some respects it was, but not beautiful enough to keep for the last 50 years. And when the modern hippies readopted the 60s hippy style, they, well, modernized it!

New colors, fabrics and looks have been added onto the old 60s hippies look making it something else again. And, after all, the 60s hippies had borrowed the look from gypsies, right? I guess what goes around comes around!

Currently being a hippie meant (among other issues) rejecting the establishment, being self-reliant, and most of all, becoming innovative. But some enthusiasts kept the hippie spirit alive,a nd now a new generation is rediscovering hippie outfits and type and also the satisfaction that comes from creating them by hand.

Keep in mind the groovy crocheted shawl you wore every day inside winter of ’68? Well, okay, maybe you weren’t even born in ’68. Ever see a picture of the favorite ‘60s rock star in a leather fringed vest? Or those embroidered denim shirts? How about tie dye? Beaded everything! That’s what this hippie dresses are all about!

Hippy Dresses

Hippy dresses worn by hippys were made of all kinds of fabrics, patchwork boho sorts of loose clothing with a vintage look. Summer dresses in particular were popular as they were very easy to make with a piece of elastic or a string that gathered and tied. When you look at old hippy pictures of that era you will also find hippie wedding dresses and prom dresses with wide flowing cuffs and sleeves and loose or layered skirts.

Hippy Fashion

If you look at hippy fashion you’ll find it often included flowers, bright colors and wild designs. They used various needlework techniques to embellish their clothes including cross stitch and embroidery. They attached funky buttons or patches as well, and who doesn’t remember the tie dye look? Their style was different than anything before in fashion, but drew off of many styles from the past.

Gypsy Clothes

A good deal of what the hippies donned were gypsy clothes in that they were loose and layered and made of the same fabrics and embellished with metal bedazzling, or buttons or other types of rick rack, ribbons and lace. A new style currently emerging is gypsy punk clothes that takes the pretty and juxtaposes it against the hard and garish. Men and women alike wore the gypsy styled clothing, sometimes both wearing skirts and puffed sleeves and cuffs.

Hippy Bags

A solid piece of boho clothes and the style that accompanied it were the hippy bags. Both men and women carried these bags either out of necessity or style. For many in this era there were lots of trips and living on the street and a bag facilitated this sort of travel. Additionally it made it easy to hide things inside that might be, well, unfortunate for officers of the law to find and or confiscate.

Hippy Glasses

This accessory is somewhat more for hippy costumes these days, but in the 60′s all sorts of fashion blurred the line between functionality and fashion. Rose colored glasses, star shaped glasses such as Elton John wore, crazy looks, colors and sizes were, well, the norm. Hippy glasses also included odd shapes like circles or harkened back to yesteryear like Ben Franklin glasses

Hippy clothes affected not only the clothes we wore but our home fashions and interior decorating as well. And in today’s economy, the hippy look and hippy clothes could very easily make a huge comeback.

Making such clothes is also a part of the look because it meant that most clothes were unique in some way. It was a way to express yourself and your current state of mind. Hippy clothes were much more than just clothing.

Hemp clothes are first of all green. I mean, how cool is it that we can actually take plants and make clothing out of it? It kind of reminds me of the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve. Just the fact that something as strong and durable as plant matter can be turned into soft and luxurious clothes is amazing to me. Then of course there is the green factor of not making synthetic materials like polyester to wear. I mean, polyester is and rayon and all those other synthetic fabrics last forever, fill our land fills and cause pollution in many regards.

Hemp is natural and its strong, but organic. It would behoove us to consider making more and more out of this great plant.

But, I like to celebrate it because I’ve always been drawn to it. The earth is so magnificent and majestic when you slow down and take the time to enjoy it.

Earthy clothes help you celebrate the earth’s strength and solidarity and uniformity while also highlighting all the differences and variety. I personally like the gold colors and the greens, but many enjoy the browns and autumn oranges of earth toned clothes. As I mentioned before, no matter what you have, they all go together which is something I really enjoy because it means I can pursue my interests, enjoy the earth’s bounty and do it on a budget which is so earthy in and of itself!

Most of the time those looking for hippy styles are only looking for halloween costumes, but there are many items of clothing that hearken back to the 60′s clothes and are still modern.

For example the crochet beanie hats are wonderful and add a nice touch to any outfit for either men or women looking for that avant garde look. Musicians and hollywood types seem to wear these a lot and anything they wear is certainly in style.

The hippie look is painted in pretty broad strokes. It includes flowers of course on everything, and dare I say it, everyone! It includes wild colors as well as more sedate earth tones.

It implies comfort and expression over just about anything else.
